Overview

Key West is the birthplace of Saltwater Light Tackle Fishing, and the majority of world record fish recorded in the Keys are caught on light tackle. Our Fish Key West Light Tackle Fishing Guides use experience and skill to carefully match their light tackle rigs to the water condition, target species, and fishing style. This lets Fish Key West clients get the most excitement out of the adventure of hunting their own world record catch.

Most fishermen define light tackle simply as a spinning or fly rod and reel. The rod is a primary factor in establishing a fishing set-up as heavy, light, or super light, but Saltwater Light Tackle Fishing is not a matter of having a gutless, soft-action rod. Our Fish Key West guides choose professional-grade rods that combine the light weight and extreme sensitivity that make landing smaller fish fun with the powerful backbone and fast action needed to make long, accurate casts and bring bigger, hard-fighting game fish to the boat within a reasonable amount of time.

The best thing about Key West Light Tackle Fishing is the opportunity to use a wide variety of fishing styles to target many different sport fish species. While the Key West Flats and Backcountry have always attracted light tackle fishermen, advances in rod and line technology now put light gear on open ocean boats trolling for Mahi-Mahi, Sailfish, Tuna, and Wahoo, or dropping bait over deep water reefs and wrecks.

Fishing the reefs off Key West is a recipe for non-stop action and large catches of good-eating fish. The captain will anchor over the fish and chum the water. When you drop live bait, rods all over the boat will bend double with hits from Barracuda, Black and Red Grouper, King Mackerel, and several species of Snapper. The many old wrecks around the Keys also hold incredible numbers of fish, and dropping live bait or jigs on the deep wrecks of the Atlantic side or fishing the shallower bottom of the Gulf will produce fast action on Amberjack, Barracuda, Cobia, Grouper, and Snapper. Surface fishing the waters above a wreck with live bait or lures can bring awesome top-water strikes from Barracuda, Bonita, Kingfish, Sailfish, Tuna, and Wahoo.

Our Fish Key West Charter Captains have decades of experience, and their light tackle boats are top-of-the-line craft with powerful, quiet motors, modern fishing and communication electronics, cabins or T-Tops for shade, comfortable seating, clean bathrooms, and coolers for snacks, drinks, and fish. All fishing gear is provided, but experienced fishermen are welcome to bring their favorite rod. From expert fishermen to kids holding their first rod, Fish Key West Light Tackle Fishing will not disappoint.
